There has never been a better time to invest in the perfect smile. Although perfect is a relative term that means something different for everyone, there is one truth of cosmetic dentistry that remains universal. Investing in whiter, stain-free teeth will drastically improve a person's overall appearance. Dr. Scott Stone, a cosmetic and family dentist in Lansing, MI, recommends professional teeth whitening treatments for anyone looking for an affordable, non-invasive method to renew a dull, discolored smile.
Professional Teeth Whitening in Lansing, MI
With a number of at-home and over-the-counter options, why are professional teeth whitening treatments with a dentist necessary? Brushing with a whitening toothpaste can certainly help, but only a dentist can provide the appropriate level of treatment with professional grade whitening agents that are unavailable over the counter to consumers.
Even with vigorous brushing, the effects of food, drinks, and tobacco, for smoker,s will inevitably stain the surface of the teeth over time. Whitening toothpaste and over the counter strips and gels alone will not be sufficient in removing accumulated staining and discolorations beyond a shade or two.
Additionally, there are some types of stains that develop from damage to the dentin, the layer of the tooth below the enamel. Because this type of stain does not originate on the surface of the tooth, surface bleaching agents are ineffective. Bonding treatments and porcelain veneers are a more effective option for stains that develop from the dentin (caused by trauma or as a side effect from certain types of medication).
Dr. Stone offers two treatment methods designed to provide the most intensive teeth whitening available:
- Deep Bleaching Teeth Whitening
- Deep Teeth Bleaching & Simple Bonding

The mouth is constantly exposed to food and beverages that leave particles and sugars on the teeth and along the gum line. In response, bacteria eat away at these particles and begin to thrive, resulting in plaque buildup. As plaque builds up on the teeth, it begins to eat away at the enamel and dentin layers of the teeth. Since tooth decay occurs in stages that get progressively worse, patients should undergo routine exams so dentists can check for tooth decay. Depending on how well the teeth are cleaned and how often the teeth are cared for by a professional, tooth decay can range from a problem that is mild to one that is more severe. Lansing cosmetic dentist Scott Stone recognizes that each case of tooth decay is unique and will recommend the most appropriate treatment for each of his patients. For more advanced stages of decay, Dr. Stone is likely to suggest inlays and onlays treatment.
When Are Inlays and Onlays Appropriate?
When tooth decay is detected early, the most likely treatment will be a dental filling. This serves to replace any lost enamel and protect the tooth from further decay. While this is often a successful form of treatment, sometimes the decay will be too extensive to be treated with a regular filling. In rear teeth with extensive decay, Dr. Stone can place an inlay or onlay. For large areas of decay that extend within the cusps of the teeth, an inlay can be applied. An onlay can be used to treat even larger areas of decay, including damage that includes one or more of the tooth’s cusps. If necessary, Dr. Stone can apply an onlay to the entire biting surface of the tooth. As with a regular dental filling, inlays and onlays strengthen the tooth by replacing material lost to tooth decay and sealing the tooth to protect against further decay. In some instances, the strength of the tooth may be so compromised that even inlays and onlays treatment will not be appropriate. For these patients in Lansing, dental crowns can treat the tooth and restore it to its natural function.
How Are Inlays and Onlays Applied?
Inlays and onlays are applied in a treatment process that very closely resembles that of a dental crown. To begin, Dr. Stone will thoroughly clean the tooth to ensure that all bacteria has been removed. Once the tooth is clean, an impression will be made of the tooth. This impression will be used to create the inlay or onlay. The inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental lab and applied at a second dental appointment. When the inlay or onlay is complete, it will be adhered to the tooth with a strong dental adhesive. When the inlay or onlay has been fitted properly, the entire tooth will be sealed off to block out bacteria. With the inlay or onlay in place, your tooth will be free of decay and will benefit from an increase in strength and function.

What Is a Smile Makeover?
A smile makeover is a treatment plan consisting of one or more procedures designed to enhance your smile. During your personal consultation withLansing cosmetic dentist Scott Stone, he will customize a smile makeover treatment plan to your unique needs and goals. Ideally, Lansing smile makeover candidates are in good health, have healthy gums and teeth, and are unhappy with the appearance of their smiles. Since a smile makeover may be used to restore health to the teeth, almost every patient will be a candidate for a smile makeover. If you desire to restore optimal health and beauty to your smile, there is a good chance that you are an ideal candidate for a smile makeover. Whether you have one dental imperfection keeping you from the smile you have always wanted, or you have many dental imperfections to address, we can find an aesthetically pleasing solution.
Smile makeover candidates must be careful to maintain good oral habits, schedule routine dental visits and dental cleanings, and properly care for any dental restorations that they have.
Smile Makeover: Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth to improve their appearance. Porcelain veneers provide natural-looking results while effectively improving the appearance of chipped teeth, misshaped teeth, discolored teeth, and crooked teeth. They may also be used to close gaps between teeth. Because of this, porcelain veneers are often used to correct minor orthodontic issues. For our patients in Lansing, porcelain veneers offer an aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking solution to many dental imperfections. If you wish to completely change your smile while still achieving natural-looking results, a smile makeover utilizing porcelain veneers may be the perfect solution.

At the Lansing cosmetic dentistry practice of Dr. Scott Stone, there are few treatments as versatile and cosmetically advantageous as porcelain veneers. The centerpiece of the most transformative smile makeovers, porcelain veneers are custom-crafted to blend seamlessly into a smile. They can be used to conceal chips, cracks, discoloration, and gaps between teeth. Because they are made of porcelain, which mimics the light-reflecting properties of tooth enamel, veneers look entirely natural in terms of the shape, size, color, and texture of surrounding teeth.
In addition to providing numerous cosmetic benefits, porcelain veneers can also be used to restore oral health in certain cases. Often referred to as “instant orthodontics,” porcelain veneers can help to improve minor alignment and bite problems without the need for traditional braces or Invisalign® invisible braces. At our cosmetic dentistry practice in Lansing, instant orthodontics provides our patients with an opportunity to restore both health and beauty to their smiles.
How Porcelain Veneers Act as an Orthodontic Treatment
Even minor flaws in the alignment or shape of the teeth can have a serious effect on a patient’s oral health. Likewise, teeth that are separated by gaps or that are unevenly spaced can weaken a patient’s bite. These are issues that are normally resolved through treatment with appliances such as metal braces or, more recently, clear plastic aligners.
In some cases, however, it may be possible to resolve the problems with porcelain veneers. For instance, if the upper teeth are too short to meet properly with the lower teeth, porcelain veneers can be used to extend their length. At our office in Lansing, porcelain veneers can also be used to widen teeth so that they fill gaps. This helps to prevent the teeth from drifting out of their optimal position. Porcelain veneers can also be used to make the teeth more uniform, and even strengthen weakened teeth.
Candidacy for Instant Orthodontics
Instant orthodontics with porcelain veneers is not a suitable treatment for everyone. Patients with more extensive orthodontic issues would be better served with Invisalign® or traditional braces. Many patients choose to undergo traditional orthodontic treatment first and then be fitted with porcelain veneers.
Porcelain veneers are often combined with other treatments such as dental crowns and bridges. In severe cases, full mouth reconstruction may be necessary. Full mouth reconstruction may or may not include the treatment of orthodontic issues, as necessary.
Benefits of Instant Orthodontics
One of the chief benefits of instant orthodontics is suggested in the name of the procedure – it is indeed instant. Rather than having to undergo months of treatment, patients who undergo instant orthodontics will emerge from the placement of their veneers with improved oral appearance.
Another benefit of instant orthodontics is that patients will also receive all of the cosmetic benefits associated with porcelain veneers. Their smiles are not only healthier, but more radiant and youthful.

Dental crowns are incredibly long-lasting, durable dental restorations used to improve the appearance, size, shape, and strength of a tooth. They are designed to provide protection to teeth that are decayed or damaged, as well as to restore their strength. Because of their versatility, dental crowns are utilized in many dental treatments. Dental crowns may be used to reinforce teeth that are affected by cracks or chips, protect teeth that are at risk of damage, to strengthen teeth that are weakened from decay, to support dental bridges, to top dental implants, and to cover the entire surface of a less-than-perfect tooth. Through dental crowns, Lansing cosmetic dentist Scott Stone can improve the aesthetics, function, and health of damaged teeth.
Placement of Dental Crowns
The entire dental crowns procedure will require two visits to our Lansing dental office. During the first visit, we will prepare your teeth for the dental crowns. Anesthesia is used to numb the areas of the teeth and gums that are to undergo treatment. The teeth to receive the dental crowns are filed down. The teeth must be filed down along the sides and front surfaces in order to make room for the dental crowns. The amount of tooth enamel that is removed is dependent upon the type of dental crowns you are receiving. Any decay present in the tooth is also removed at this time. Once this process has been completed, an impression is then made of the teeth that are to undergo treatment. This impression is essential to the dental crowns process as it acts as a model from which the dental crown will be made. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your crown will be custom-made to your tooth’s unique specifications. It typically takes two to three weeks for the permanent dental crown to arrive. After making the impression, we will place a temporary dental crown.
During your second visit to our Lansing dental office, your permanent dental crowns are placed.
We will check the fit of the dental crowns to ensure a proper bite. We will also ensure that the color of your dental crowns seamlessly blends in with the surrounding teeth so that your new dental restoration looks natural. Once the color and fit are correct, we will cement the dental crowns into place.
Dental Crowns Aftercare
While waiting for the placement of your permanent dental crown, you should avoid chewing and eating sticky or hard foods. You should also try to chew on the opposite side of the temporary dental crown. If your temporary dental crown falls out, please contact our office immediately.
Patients should not experience pain or discomfort after the placement of dental crowns. If you experience sensitivity or pain when biting down, the dental crown may be placed too high. This is corrected by adjusting the dental crown. It is important to continue brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and continuing to receive routine dental check-ups and cleanings. For our patients in Lansing, dental crowns can last for many years. With proper care, dental crowns can last for up to 25 years.
